Mobility and transfer for mature learners

Learner mobility means having the ability to change your path once you start postsecondary education. It’s about keeping your options open — so if you take a break, you can move to a different program or school later for whatever reason.

Transfer is one way learner mobility works. It happens when courses, credentials or recognized learning from previous study or experience are accepted toward a new program at a college, university or Indigenous Institute. This may include formal coursework, completed credentials or learning recognized through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR).

For learners, mobility and transfer may involve:

  • returning to education after a pause
  • changing programs or institutions
  • building on previous courses or credentials
  • using work experience or prior training through PLAR
  • continuing learning without starting over

Learner mobility helps you keep the progress you’ve already made and adapt your education to your goals, life circumstances and career plans.

Benefits of mobility for mature learners

Learner mobility supports flexible, realistic pathways for people whose education journeys may not follow a traditional or linear path. For adult and non-traditional learners, mobility helps acknowledge where you’ve been and supports where you want to go next.

Mobility can help you:

  • adapt your education to life changes such as work commitments, family responsibilities or changing personal circumstances
  • build on previous learning and experience, including courses, credentials, training or work experience recognized through PLAR
  • change direction or upgrade skills as your career goals or interests evolve
  • return to education with confidence after a break, knowing your past learning may still be relevant
  • plan a path forward that fits your goals without needing to start from the beginning

Learner mobility recognizes that learning happens in many ways and supports continued progress, even when your path changes.

Next step for mature learners

Taking the next step doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Use these steps to explore your options and plan a path that fits your goals and life circumstances:

  1. Clarify your goals. Are you returning to education, upgrading your skills, changing fields or completing a credential you started earlier?
  2. Explore pathways. Use the Transfer Pathways Search Tool to see defined routes that may include advanced standing or transfer credit.
  3. Check whether your previous learning may count. Use the Course Transfer Search Tool or explore PLAR options at institutions you’re considering.
  4. Review admission requirements. Look into admission categories and requirements for mature, adult or returning learners.
  5. Learn about credentials. Understand what certificates, diplomas and degrees mean in Ontario and how they connect to further study or career goals.
  6. Connect with institutions early. Ask about PLAR, admission processes, timelines and available advising or learner supports.

Use ONTransfer tools to compare your options. Bring information together to plan your next step with confidence.
