The University of Guelph may give you credit for courses you have already completed at another school. This is called advanced standing. Depending on the course, you may receive specified credit, unspecified credit, or an exemption.
Specified credit means your previous course is considered equal to a specific University of Guelph course.
Unspecified credit means your previous course is recognized as being in a certain subject area and year level, but it does not match one specific University of Guelph course.
Exemption means you do not receive credit, but the course can still count toward meeting a program requirement or prerequisite.

To graduate, you must complete at least 5.00 credits through the University of Guelph.
You must also complete at least 60% of the required 3000- and 4000-level courses for your program through the University of Guelph.
University of Guelph courses include courses taken on exchange, study abroad courses, and degree-credit courses offered through the School of Continuing Studies.
Courses taken on a Letter of Permission do not count toward these requirements.

The University of Guelph will review all courses you have completed at an accredited college or university for possible transfer credit.
If a course was completed more than 10 years ago, it will usually be considered for unspecified transfer credit.
The appropriate Faculty will decide whether an older course can receive specified transfer credit. This decision depends on the course you took and the program you are enrolled in.

At the University of Guelph, Prior Learning Assessment, or PLA, may allow you to receive credit for learning you gained outside of a formal university course.
This learning may come from work experience, independent study, or non-degree courses.
Each department decides which of its courses can be considered through PLA. The process may include tests, written or oral exams, interviews, performance evaluations, or a portfolio review.
To receive credit, you must show a qualified faculty member that you have already learned the required knowledge and skills for the course.

Transfer credits will appear on your University of Guelph transcript as CRD. They will not be included in your GPA.
You can view the courses you received transfer credit for, along with the credit value for each course, in WebAdvisor. WebAdvisor is also where you register for courses and view your grades.
Your official University of Guelph transcript will show the total number of transfer credits awarded and the school where you earned them.

Follow these steps to receive your transfer credit assessment at the University of Guelph:
- After you apply, you will receive an email confirming that your application was received. This email will include your WebAdvisor login information. You can use WebAdvisor to check your admission status and see which documents have been received.
- You must arrange for official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended, or are currently attending, to be sent to Admission Services by the deadline for your entry term: Winter entry: December 1, Summer entry: April 1, and
Fall entry: May 1 - Official transcripts should be sent to: University of Guelph

Guelph, ON N1G 2W1 - You will usually find out how much transfer credit you have received when you receive your offer of admission. This information will also be available in WebAdvisor.
By accepting your offer of admission, you are also accepting the transfer credit awarded.
If your offer is conditional and based on mid-term grades, your transfer credit assessment may not be complete yet.

A transfer credit assessment at the University of Guelph is included in the supplemental/document evaluation fee paid via the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

To have your previous college or university courses reviewed for transfer credit at the University of Guelph, you will need:
- Application for admission
- Official transcript(s)
- Course outline(s) may be required

You do not need to complete a separate application form for transfer credit at the University of Guelph.
If you have attended a college or university before, you will automatically be reviewed for transfer credit when you apply.

Transfer credit is automatically reviewed at the University of Guelph for successful applicants.
When you apply, you must include all colleges and universities you have attended.
You must also submit all required documents, such as transcripts, by the deadline for your program and entry term.

Transfer credit decisions at the University of Guelph are generally provided with your offer of admission.

You can ask for your transfer credit decision to be reviewed.
To request a review, submit detailed course outlines or syllabi to an Admission Counsellor for the courses you want to review. These documents will help the University decide if your transfer credit decision can be changed.
